Changing the spare tyre

Instructions for changing the spare tyre

Instructions for changing the spare tyre, necessary notes, especially when having trouble on the highway (parking on the curb and warning from a long distance).

It is not rare for tyres to be damaged or deflated while traveling. Changing a tyre on the road on your own is not difficult, but to avoid costly payment or wasted time waiting for rescue, even possible accidents on the road or damages to the vehicle’s undercarriage, you need to understand the fundamental steps of the process.

Park your car in a safe place - Set a warning before changing tyre

As soon as detecting a damaged tyre, the driver needs to turn on the emergency warning signals and try to pull the car into a parking space as close to the curb as possible to minimize obstruction to traffic. It is important to set up warning signs behind your vehicle, at a minimum distance of 50m from your vehicle. If you are forced to stop in the middle of the road, there should be extremely clear warning signs for strong attention.

The parking surface should be flat and hard in order to prevent the vehicle from moving while changing tyres. Once you have completely stopped, park the car to change tyres by selecting “P”.

Prepare spare tyre and tools

Please try to learn information about the vehicle's spare tyre (See manuals). Many people don't know where to find and how to retrieve the spare tyre, jack tool, or the car's undercarriage jack point when they have to change tyres.

Place the spare tyre under the car near the tyre that needs changing (as a backup if the vehicle collapses). The next step is to place the jack under the car near the tyre to be replaced. Remember to choose the correct "jack point" on the chassis, or else the car body can be broken, bent or even collapse during the lifting process.

Lifting step 1

Lifting step 1

First of all, just raise the jack to be in close contact with the "jack point" of the car and lift the car up just enough to remove the rim’s pressure on the flat tyre. You do not need to lift the car off the ground yet. It is required to ensure that the jack is always at a stable perpendicular position to the ground.

Remove wheel bolts

Remove wheel bolts

To ensure an effective process of bolt removal, you need to unscrew the bolts when the tyre is still in contact with the ground. This will prevent the tyre from rotating when loosening the bolts.

Use the correct wrench and other tools of the right size to remove the screw and turn the screw in the correct direction (Counter-clockwise). You need to use a lot of force, maybe even your feet and bodyweight to remove the bolts.

Lifting step 2

Lifting step 2 – lift the tyre off the ground and remove

Once you've removed all the bolts, start raising the jack high enough for the wheel to come off the ground and pull out the tyre. Particularly, make sure that the vehicle is always firmly stabilized during the lifting and removing process. If there is any instability, reinforce the jack point before continuing to lift the vehicle or change the tyre. In case the tyre is stuck due to rust, you can use a rubber hammer or a hard object to hit the inside edges of the tyre to loosen it.

The next step is to remove the damaged tyre and put it under the car. This aims to mitigate the risk of the car collapsing due to a broken jack, causing danger and damage to the vehicle/person.

Install the spare tyre on the axle

Install the spare tyre on the axle

When installing the spare tyre on the axle, make sure to place the tyre in the right position, where the valve head faces outward.

Fix the wheel bolts

Fix the wheel bolts

After positioning the spare tyre on the axle, gently tighten the bolts just to make sure the tyre is in place. Remember to tighten the bolts in the star shape order and make sure they are equally fastened.

Lower the tyre on the ground and tighten the wheel bolts

The next step is to lower the tyre by slowly loosening the jack until the tyre touches the ground with enough grip to prevent the car from moving. Start maximum fastening all the bolts.

Lower the jack, recover items to store damaged tyres.

Finally, completely lower the jack, remove the warning object, place the tools, the jack, and the damaged tyre in the right place in the vehicle, and check the undercarriage for safety.

Drive with the spare tyre.

After changing the tyre, drive the car slowly for a while to make sure the tyre changing process has no error before operating the car normally. Note: When using a spare tyre, you should not drive fast or perform dangerous maneuvers. Most importantly please repair or replace damaged tyres as soon as you see a tyre service station on the road.
