Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) has been an active participant in the South African automotive industry since 1923, and remains one of Southern Africa’s leading automotive companies. FMCSA is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, which sold approximately 117,020 vehicles in 2018. 50,912 of these were sold in South Africa through its 142 dealers nationwide, placing Ford among the top three automotive companies in South Africa. FMCSA exported 66,108 vehicles in 2019, with the majority destined for the European Union.
Ford’s current vehicle line-up includes the Figo, Fiesta, Focus, Mustang, EcoSport, Everest, Ranger, Tourneo and, Custom and full-size guise.
In 2008, Ford invested R3.4 billion (US$500 million) into South Africa and in February 2011 FMCSA transformed from a low volume, multiple vehicle plant to a high volume, single platform production facility building the Ranger.
In April 2016, Ford Motor Company invested R2.5-billion (US$170 million) to expand operations at the Silverton Assembly Plant to produce the Everest, along with the Ranger. The investment created approximately 1,200 new jobs at Ford South Africa and within the South African supplier network.
At the end of 2017 Ford announced a further investment of R3-billion ($220-million) to expand production capacity in order to meet growing local and international demand for the Ford Ranger and for the first-ever Ford Ranger Raptor which will be produced in South Africa when it is launched into the market in 2019.
Currently the Ford Ranger is exported to over 100 markets in Europe, Middle East and Africa and the Everest is exported into Sub-Saharan Africa.
Ford’s Struandale Engine Plant, based in Port Elizabeth machines component kits, comprising engine heads, blocks and crankshafts for the Duratorq TDCi engine. These components are exported to Ford engine assembly plants in Thailand and Argentina. Engines are also assembled locally for the Ford Ranger, Ranger Raptor and Everest produced in Silverton, as well as for export to India, China and North America.
FMCSA directly creates jobs of approximately 4,300 people in South Africa, and indirectly approximately 52,000 jobs are created within the value chain.
FMCSA is committed to the upliftment and development of its workforce. The company also has a strong history of giving back to the community and continues this tradition with various outreach initiatives supporting corporate citizenship, volunteering and local sustainability. 22,500 South Africans were beneficiaries of Ford’s CSR initiative.
