PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA, 8 December 2020 – The limited edition 2020/2021 Carroll Shelby Signature Series, named after its eponymous race driver and company founder, is arguably the most complete and polished car in Shelby American history and pays tribute to the motorsport icon in typical muscle-car fashion.
While the majority of the fifty Carroll Shelby Signature Series cars have been prioritised for the North American market, Shelby South Africa is proud to confirm an allocation of three Carroll Shelby Signature Series cars, all of which will be right-hand drive and available in a choice of convertible or fastback, automatic or manual transmission. The level of authenticity will be guaranteed by each car’s placement into the official Shelby Registry.
“The limited edition 2020/2021 Carroll Shelby Signature Series Mustang is the ultimate combination of exceptional design and amazing brawn,” said Gary Patterson, president of Shelby American. “From its refined yet functional styling to its poised handling and awesome power, along with its performance capabilities, this Shelby is the automotive equivalent to a champion fighter that looks as good in a tux as in the ring.”
Developed to be a combination of power and agility, the Shelby American team spent the past two years carefully engineering and refining the car to meet the highest expectations. The purposeful look of the Carroll Shelby Signature Edition was achieved by fitting new aluminium fenders which widen the body and provide an increase in space needed for the one-piece forged monoblock wheels and tuned MagneRide suspension. Making this all perform in harmony is the new Brembo brake system with 6 pistons calipers on the front and 4 piston calipers on the rear. To avoid situations where brake fade might occur, extra cooling channels for the brakes has been exclusively developed and tested by Shelby.
Carroll Shelby was famous for his love of horsepower and as someone who grew up in Texas, he always wanted to build engines bigger and more powerful than before. Under the modified hood of the Carroll Shelby Signature Series is an 800hp engine that honours that passion, fitted with bespoke Shelby components for consistent and sustained performance lap after lap. The 5.0-litre V8 engine is fed additional air by a custom Edelbrock supercharger, which helps to push power output to just over 800hp. A Borla exhaust system with four custom exhaust tips delivers Shelby’s signature soundtrack; which is a recipe combining the V8’s deep burble contrasted by the supercharger’s higher tone.
Elsewhere there are other exterior design cues that match form with function. The metallic ram air hood, front fascia and bodywork was sculpted to both manage airflow and dramatically drop under-bonnet temperatures. The rear of the Carroll Shelby Signature Edition has been heavily revised with a spoiler and diffuser with a new tail panel inserted between the rear lights.
Changes to the inside are all clearly denoted by Shelby branding. This complete package includes door mats and door sill plates, and a gauge cluster with Shelby gauges. Adding to the allure are also branded caps for the radiator, coolant tank and oil cap. Should the customer want to remove more weight from the car, he can do so by replacing the rear seat with a harness bar.
Shelby South Africa has a history of being able to offer customers other special editions which have been built in Carroll Shelby’s honour. The 2016 Shelby Terlingua was built as a tribute to the Terlingua Racing Team and the 1967 Trans AM Championship. Only seventy-five of these cars were produced, with fifty reserved for the United States, twenty landing up in other markets and five assigned to South Africa. Besides a set of updates that included an 830HP supercharged engine, bigger Brembo brakes, and a Borla exhaust, all cars came with an autograph plaque of Bill Neale (a Terlingua founder and designer of the racing team crest), Carroll Shelby and Jerry Titus, the 1967 Trans Am Champion winning driver.
All Shelby conversions and upgrades are done at the official Mod Shop in the Western Cape by a team of technicians trained by Shelby American.
The Carroll Shelby Signature Series is priced at R2 708 000, including base vehicle. Pricing is subject to exchange rate fluctuations.
