25SE6 - Safety Recall Ford Transit and Transit/Tourneo Custom: AGM Battery Venting

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (Manufacturing) (Pty) Ltd (FMCSA) has commenced a Safety Recall relating to certain 2022-2026 Model Year Ford Transit and Transit / Tourneo Custom.

In some affected vehicles built with H7 AGM batteries, customers may experience an acidic smell similar to that of rotten eggs inside the cabin of the vehicle, a hissing sound, or visible gas venting from the battery. Additionally, the seat area may feel unusually warm.

Under normal operating conditions, an Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery produces only hydrogen and oxygen during a standard gassing event. However, increased temperatures can trigger a side reaction that produces hydrogen sulphide (H2S). Prolonged exposure to these emissions may result in potential health effects.

There are 582 vehicles affected in South Africa.

FMCSA or a Ford authorised dealer is contacting customers and advising them to schedule a service appointment to install a battery vent tube (if missing) which will expel any gases to the vehicle’s exterior. In addition, they will perform a visual inspection of the battery and replace it, if required, at no charge to the customer.

Our commitment, together with our dealer partners, is to provide customers with the highest level of service and support.

If customers would like to check if their Ford vehicle is affected by this or any other recall, they can visit www.ford.co.za/support/recalls/ and enter their 17 digit VIN number in the search bar. Customers can also view recent safety recalls by checking their Ford app or by clicking here.
